Exam 3: Hormones Part One Flashcards
What does MAMAWAWA stand for?
Men are Men and Women are Women
In the Neuroendocrine System, what is the hippocampus responsible for?
Responsible for controlling hormone secretion
What is the main function of the Pineal Gland?
Mainly responsible for the bodies rhythms
What is the main function of the anterior pituitary gland?
Hormone secretion
How are hormones released and where do they go?
They are released by the endocrine glands and enter into the blood
Small protein molecules that are made of a string of amino acids?
Peptide Hormone
The smaller and simpler version of the Peptide Hormone?
Amino acids Hormone
What are Steroid Hormones derived from?
Cholesterol
What are steroid hormones most important for?
Sexual development and behavior
What is the difference between a Peptide/Amine Hormone and that of a Steroid Hormone?
A steroid hormone binds to a receptor inside the target cell where it combines with the receptor molecule. The combined pair then make their way into the nucleus of the cell where it binds to the DNA controlling the expression of the genes. On the other hand Peptide/Amine hormones binds directly to the receptor proteins and activate a second messenger.
Vasopressin is a hormone that :
Facilitates water absorption in the kidney
Oxytocin is a hormone that:
deals with parental behavior
What are the major regions of the Neuroendocrine System:
The Pituitary: Anterior and the Posterior
Hypothalamus: Supraoptic and paraventricular
How does the Hypothalamus control the secretion of hormones?
By Releasing factors and Inhibitory factors
