Chapter One: Structure and Function Flashcards
What are the 2 major system of the Nervous System?
Central Nervous System and the Peripheral Nervous system
What is included in the Central Nervous System?
The Brain and the Spinal Cord
What are the 2 major divisions of the Peripheral Nervous System?
Somatic Nervous System and the Autonomic Nervous System
What is the somatic Nervous system responsible for?
Interactions with the body’s EXTERNAL environment
What is the Autonomic Nervous System responsible for
Interactions with the body’s INTERNAL environment
What are the major functions of the somatic nervous system?
Delivers and Sends sensory information between the brain, head, and body
information travels thorough spin and cranial nerves
What is the primary function of the autonomic Nervous System?
To control the organs of the body
What are the major divisions of the autonomic nervous system?
Parasympathetic(rest and digest) and sympathetic (flight or fight)
What are the four specialized protections of the central nervous system
Meninges
Bone
Cerebrospinal fluid
Blood Brain Barrier
What is the function of the cerebrospinal fluid?
- provides cushion and nutrients to the brain
- fills the subarachnoid space, central canal of sc, and cerebral ventricles
What is the blood brain barrier?
Blocks the passage of toxic substances from the blood to the brain
What is the spinal cords major function?
Transmit sensory and motor signals between the brain and the body
What is the difference between Dorsal vs Ventral spine
SAD = Sensory, Afferent, Dorsal
MEV = Motor, Efferent, Ventral
Are afferent neurons multipolar or unipolar
unipolar
Are efferent neurons multipolar or unipolar
multipolar
