OSHA requirements for employers

A

standards
- personal protective equipment (need to give, train, + enforce)
- hazard comm. (labels on chemicals, info on how to handle)
- blood born pathogens (training on how to handle + dispose of blood + bodily fluids)
- emergency exit procedures (how to get out, not blocked)
- lockout/tagout (equipment w/ issue being fixed (don’t turn on)

follow general duty clause
- have to provide safe workplace, free from recognized hazards that are likely to cause serious injury or death

keep safety + health records
- all injuries, illnesses, deaths
- OSHA form 300 (unless 10 or less employees or safe place)

posting requirements
- have to post OSHA posters somewhere

A

can’t announce they’re coming
companies can refuse but OSHA will get warrant

priorities…
- imminent danger, catastrophes, worker complaints, referrals, targeted inspections (highly hazardous places), follow ups

process…
- opening conference (why they’re there, process)
- physical inspection (walk-around, interview employees, look @ records)
- closing conference (problems, how to fix, right to appeal citation)

voluntary consultation program
- if company w/ <250 employees call OSHA = for free –> no penalties
