Why must classrooms be managed effectively:
- Classrooms are Multidimensional: many activities, reading, writing, playing games, communicating w friends
- Activities Occur Simultaneously: multiple incidents happen at once
- Things Happen Quickly: events occur rapidly
- Events are Often Unpredictable: ex. fire alarm, fight, sick
- There is Little Privacy: Students always observing
- Classrooms Have Histories: students remember previous occurrences in said classroom.
Getting off to the right start:
- communicate the rules and procedures and solicit student cooperation
- get students to effectively engage in all learning activities
Emphasizing instruction and a positive classroom climate:
- effective managers manage the group’s activities
- active, motivated, engaged learners
- use preventive, proactive strategies rather than becoming immersed in reactive disciplinary tactics
- teachers should competently guide and structure classroom activities
Management goals and strategies:
- help students spend more time on learning and less time on non-goal-directed behavior
- prevent students from developing problems
Classroom arrangement:
- reduce congestion in high-traffic areas
- make sure that you can easily see all students
- make often-used teaching materials and student supplies easily accessible
- make sure that students can easily observe whole-class presentations
