Exam 3 Flashcards
Codominace
The phenotype of two alleles is observed in the heterozygote
Incomplete dominance
An intermediate phenotype is observed the pink in the flowers.
Lethal phenotypes
Mendaline ratios with lethal alleles
Epistasis
Describes interactions between two or more genes
Pleiotropy
A single gene having multiple effects on individuals phenotype
Penetrace
Not every individual with mutant genotype displays mutant phenotype
Expressivity
The degree to which a phenotype is expressed
Genome wide association study (GWAS)
Identify regions of chromosomes that are likely to contain gene association with trait but NOT identify a specific causative gene.
Horizontal gene transfer
Individuals in the same generation can exchange DNA through other mechanisms (present in bacteria only)
Three types of horizontal gene transfer
- Conjugation
- Transformation
- Transduction
Conjugation
Transfer of DNA from one cell to another through direct cell contact
Transformation
Direct uptake of DNA molecules by a cell.
Transduction
Donor is bacteria not a virus but facilitates the process
