what is smooth muscle?
- it lines the walls of hollow viscera; organs like the eye muscles, airways, and larger arteries.
- Involuntary, in the stomach, bladder and respiratory system
Cell shape and appearance: single, uninucleate, with no striations
What is cardiac muscle?
the muscles that line the heart. they are cushioned by connective tissues in a branching pattern.
- contracts regularly due to pacemaker
cell shape and appearance: branching chain of cells, has striations, and is binucleate
What is skeletal muscle?
Muscles that attach to bones or in some cases skin.
They: attach to the body’s skeleton, have voluntary movement, and tire easily.
they also provide strength and support; they have tendons that connect the muscles to the bone also
Cell shape and appearance: single, very long and cylindrical, multinucleate cells with obvious striations
Abduction
Moving away from the body midline
Adduction
Moving towards the body midline
Elevation
Moving a body part up
Depression
Moving a body part down
Pronation
rotating the forearm so the palm is facing backwards or down
Supination
Rotating the forearm so the palm is facing forwards or up
Flexion
Decreasing the angle between two bones.
(Bending the leg or arm.)
Extension
Increasing the angle between two bones
(Strightning the legs or arms from a bent position)
