2 biotypes:
Cytopathic
Noncytopathic- all PI calves
vertical transmission = make PI calves
horizontal transmission = from PI calves
Dx:
VI $$$ but gold standard
IHC (ear notch) ag sample $ maternal abs no interference
PCR $$ pooled samples; false +
BVDV control strategy
PI animals reservoir for BVDV
Control programs: detect & eliminate PIs
Monitoring or surveillance
Several protocols used for herd screening
Bluetongue virus
infects cattle & sheep
transmitted by Cullicoides
more CS sheep > cows
teratogenesis > abortion
cerebral malformations, weak calves, stillborns
Aspergillus fumigatus
70% of fungal abortions in cattle
