Exam #2: Circulation Overview Flashcards
What three body systems work together to maintain pH?
Circulatory, respiratory and renal
Which two valves are associated with the left heart?
- AV: mitral (bicuspid)
- SL: aortic
Which two valves are associated with the right heart?
- AV: tricuspid
- SL: pulmonary
What is systole? Is this depolarization or repolarization?
Contraction (depolarization)
- Ventricles emptying (ejection of blood)
What is diastole? Is this depolarization or repolarization?
Relaxation (repolarization)
- Ventricles filling
When does most myocardial perfusion occur?
Disatole (relaxation and ventricular filling)
How does vessel diameter relate to resistance?
- Wider vessel = less resistance
- Narrower vessel = more resistance
Where does the largest pressure drop occur in the heart? Where is the pressure the highest?
Arterioles
- Highest in aorta and arteries
What is the relationship between velocity and area if flow is constant?
- Larger area (capillaries) = smaller velocity
- Smaller area (aorta) = larger velocity
Where in the body is a series pattern of vessels seen?
Heart and lungs
Where in the body is a parallel pattern of vessels seen? During exercise, how does this change?
Rest of body besides heart and lungs (high in renal, GI and skeletal muscle)
- During exercise, skeletal muscle gets most of the cardiac output
