Exam 1: Week 4 Flashcards
What is the medical term for low platelets?
thrombocytopenia
What are three mechanisms of thrombocytopenia?
Consumption (getting used up), destruction, lack of production
Reasons for platelet consumptions
and one that is usually not
DIC, vasculitis, envenomation, usually NOT due to blood loss
Reasons for platelet destruction
Immune mediated (auto +/- RBCs, Infectious: Ehrlichia, drugs)
Where do platelets arrive from?
Megakaryocytes
Where do megakaryocytes arrive from?
location
bone marrow
reasons for lack of production of platelets
reversible vs nonreversible stem cell injury: chemotherapeutic agents, other drugs. toxins. inflitrative diseases. estrogen toxicity.
Other cytopenias likely
A blend of mechanisms (eg destroy platlets via IMHA, develop DIC and consume remaining platelets)
define cytopenia
Cytopenia means that you have low levels of red blood cells (anemia), white blood cells (leukopenia) or platelets (thrombocytopenia). Cytopenia also includes pancytopenia, which means all of your blood cell levels are low. Causes may be genetic or acquired. Depending on the cause, you may or may not need treatment.

define thrombocytosis
Thrombocytosis occurs when another disease or condition causes you to have a high platelet count. People who have thrombocytosis have normal platelets and a lower risk of blood clots and bleeding than people who have thrombocythemia. Thrombocytosis is more common than thrombocythemia.
True or false: thrombocytosis, in most cases, is not of clinical concern
True
What are some causes of thrombocytosis?
Reactive thrombocytosis (Inflammation)
Steroids (HYPERADRENOCORTICISM)
Chronic hemorrhage
