exam 1 - methods Flashcards
construct
conceptual representation of behaviors or the phenomenon around which research is based
operationalization
defines a construct in concrete terms
external validity
how closely the experimental setup resembles real-life situations (“is it happening in the real-world?”)
internal validity
likelihood that only the manipulated variable accounts for the results, rather than some extraneous factor—such as participants failure to understand instructions (“are you measuring what you intended to measure?”)
reliability
the degree to which participants receive the same score when tested with a conceptually similar instrument or when tested at different times
problems in studies
-response bias
-sampling error
-demand characteristics
-social desirability bias
third variables
a variable, often unmeasured in correlational research, that can be the true explanation for the relationship between 2 other variables
