exam 1 material Flashcards
What is muscle fitness?
an integral part of not only health related fitness, but also performance related fitness
What is muscle endurance?
ability to perform multiple contractions at a SUB-MAXIMAL load
- more reps means more endurance
what is muscle power?
Ability to exert force per unit of time
why test muscular fitness?
- it reduces all cause mortality risk beyond what is observed w/ aerobic only Exercise
- provides baseline level of physical fitness
- useful tool for designing exercise training program
tests of muscular strength
- can be measured statically (like isometric) or dynamic (like range of motion)
- expressed as resistance overcome (kg or pounds)
- example: static muscle strength test: Handgrip Dynamometer: can predict mortality, and used more in older individuals
dynamic muscle strength test
1-RM Testing
- maximal resistance moved through full ROM w/ good posture
- 5-RM and 10-RM tests are also valid for measuring maximal muscle strength
when would we use a 5 or 10-RM test as opposed to 1?
for high risk
5 rm would be able to squat or bench heavier loads
what is power?
work/time=forcexdisplacement/time
power=forcexdisplacement/time
power=forcexvelocity
What is flexibility?
ability to move a joint through a complete, pain free ROM
what is balance?
ability to maintain desired position
when would you use to assess patients CV endurance and Muscular fitness?
-submax, Astrand rhyming, for cv endurance
-5 rm for his muscular fitness
for high risk: 10 RM (Which is submax)
maybe grip strength for him
Astrand rhyming test workload:
Based on gender and whether patient is conditioned or unconditioned
