EXAM 1 - intro Flashcards
The DSM-5 Definition of Psychological Disorders
Behavioral, psychological, or biological dysfunctions that are unexpected in their cultural context and associated with present distress and/or impairment in functioning, or increased risk of suffering, death, pain, or impairment
Statistical (Infrequency) Model
Measures the frequency of a characteristic or behavior and calculates average occurrence
If the individual’s behavior frequency deviates significantly from the average, the behavior is considered “abnormal”
The Cultural-Situational Model (Norm Violation)
Violation of the acceptable behavioral norms (rules) of a group
Pros: Allows for differences among social groups and applies values
Cons: May be hard to agree on norms and stigmatizes those who don’t conform
The Harmful Dysfunction or Maladaptive Model
Abnormality is defined as maladaptive behavior that results in impairment in adaptive functioning (e.g., impairs ability to take care of basic needs, to fulfill roles/obligations, to develop/sustain good relationships)
ro: Looks at behavior in relation to functioning/need for treatment
Con: Should question whether one should adapt in all circumstances
