Main Idea
Humans are motivated by more than biological drives and have a major psychosocial task to accomplish/crisis to overcome across 8 developmental stages
Psychosocial stage: Trust vs. mistrust
0-1
Infant needs basic needs consistently met to feel the world is trustworthy
Can I trust the world? am I taken care of, fed, held, etc?
Psychosocial stage: Autonomy vs. shame and doubt
1-2
Mobile toddlers who can now walk have a newfound freedom and being able to exercise this freedom allows them to learn basic independence
can i navigate the world on my own? or should i be afraid?
Psychosocial stage: Initiative vs. Guilt
3-5
Initiate activities and like to do things by themselves
play on own, engage in new activities
Psychosocial stage: Industry vs inferiority
6-11
Focus on accomplishments and start making comparisons between themselves and classmates
doing good at school? playing at recess appropriately? - feel inferior if failing

Adolescence

Teenagers trying to gain sense of identity
Psychosocial stage: intimacy vs isolation
Young adulthood
Making first long-term commitments in intimate relationships

Psychosocial stage: Generativity vs. stagnation
Middle Adulthood
Focus on work and home, want to make contribution to society
-have i done meaningful things and contributed to society?
Psychosexual stage: integrity vs despair
Looking back on life
did I live life I want to live? am I the person I want to be?
