The long term offender
They are serving 10+ years in prison, the numbers of prisoners here are increasing because of longer sentences - they tend to become the model prisoners because they have a stake in maintaining status quo - some have started to design programs and become lifers/helpers

What are the three groups of the elderly offender?
- Entered young - serving long sentences, 2. Convicted later in their life - could be financial or sexual, 3. “Career” criminals = repeat offenders
Elderly offender
Will cost a lot of money because of medical and health care and chronic diseases, housing issues because of assessbility for them, and sometimes there would be special programs to release early if they are no longer a threat to society
Offenders with a mental illness
Housing is often separated and are often bullied by other prisoners, and they may have higher displinary infractions because they might not know how to follow the rules, examples of diseases are schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, and major depression, they are often linked to substance abuse

The substance abused
Likely 75% or more of prisoners - they have a history of abuse, and or committed. CRime to support addiction, – usually treatment programs for abuse and dependency and self help groups
The sex offender
They are more likely to need special hosing (PC-protective custody) and are more likely to be bullied in prison. Some supervision concerns includes having to register as a sex offender, a gps monitor for life, or having no access to the Internet
The situational offender
They are not a typical prisoner and was yeah basically seen as a normal citizen for example they went to college. May be a possible helper and have better job options both in and out of prison
The offender with hiv/aids
They get this especially from sharing needles, there are policy issues concerning the employees, prevention - education programs are put in to the prison, medical care, more women have this than men

20,000 with hiv and 4,500 with aids
The mentally handicapped offender
They typically have a low I.Q, difficulty adjusting and following ruled, more likely to be bullied by others, and may need more one on one than group setting

The military veteran offender
Most of them are males, the highest of these in prison was in 1978, some issues that they have are substance abuse, mental health disorders (PTSD)
