The variety of programs, services, facilities, and orgs that are responsible for the management of individuals who have been accused or convicted of criminal offense
What is a prison?
An institution for incarceration of persons convicted of serious crimes that they are held here for more than a year.
Who runs a prison?
The executive branch runs it and it’s administered by the state/federal government
What is a jail?
A facility to hold prettily detainees for >48 hours and is usually administered by the county aka sheriff

What are the goals that correction will be — fair punishment and community protection – punishment rationales (reasons or logical reasons for a course of action

The system learns and grow due to outside feedback about effectiveness. And it’s often difficult to obtain useful feedback because you see a lot of negative things in social media about correction

Multiple functions: probation and jail, multiple agencies: sheriffs office, Many levels of government: city, county, state, Many branches of government: legislative - laws, judicial - probation

What are some key issues facing corrections today?
Managing the correctional organization, conflicting goals, political idealology, funding, corrections is paid for by tax revenues (must compete with other services), punishments
Four principles to penitentiary
Secure and sanitary structure and conditions, systemstic inspections, abolition of fees, reformatory regimen (hard labor and religious instruction and reflection)
