Exam 1 Flashcards
study guide
What is anatomy?
Anatomy is the Study of Structure derived from Greek
meaning “to cut up”. Ana = “Up”, temnein “to cut”
what is Physiology?
Physiology is the study of the function of the body’s
structures.
Four steps of the Scientific Method (a.k.a. Scientific Process)?
The Scientific Process is a systematic and rigorous process:
1. Examine natural events and phenomena through
Observation.
2. Develop a Hypothesis; which is a possible explanation
(educated guess) for how observed phenomena occur.
3. Experiment and test hypothesis through collection of
data.
4. Draw Conclusions, where the tested hypothesis will
either be supported, rejected or modified.
Gross Anatomy
Surface anatomy
Regional anatomy
Systemic anatomy
Microscopic Anatomy
cells, tissues, and organs that can only be seen with a microscope
Know the levels of biological organization in order
Chemical, Cellular, Tissue, Organ,
Organ System, Organism
What is the smallest Unit that displays all characteristics of life?
The cell
Are Viruses alive? Know why or why not.
not alive depend on a host cell
What are the 11 Organ Systems?
integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary, endocrine, and reproductive systems.
Do Humans start as a fetus with a calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate skeleton?
no hyaline cartilage then ossification (osteogenesis)
What is the anatomical position and why do directional terms and planes matter?
relative position of one
body structure in relation to another
so you don’t do surgery in the wrong place
What are the various body cavities?
Spinal canal, Pelvic cavity, Thoracic cavity, Ventral cavity, Cranial cavity, Body cavity, Pleural cavity, Dorsal, Vertebral column, Mediastinum, Pericardium
What are the cavities inside the major cavities?
Dorsal cavity
Thoracic cavity
Abdominopelvic cavity
What divides the Thoracic from Abdominal Pelvic Cavity?
The diaphragm
