Ex 1 Instrumentation in Microbiology Flashcards
Three important properties of glass in microbiology laboratories
> transparent
stable/non reactive
easily malleable
thin glass tube which is used to hold small amount of material (sample or culture broth) for testing
plain glass tube
test tube with screw cap cover used for holding materials, especially for transport and growing of cultures in broth
screw capped tube
screw capped tube with smaller test tubes inserted upside down inside it, which is used to detect production of gas by microorganisms (fermentation test)
Durham fermentation tube
glass ware with a closed vertical arm extending into a bulbous portion with a tapered opening used in observing organism doing anaerobic fermentation
Smith fermentation tube
shallow glass or plastic flat bottomed dish with a lid used to culture bacteria on specially prepared solid media
Petri Dish
Narrow neck and mouth that enlarge gradually to a flat bottom, usually graduated which is used to swirl content without spilling
Erlenmeyer Flask
Long cylindrical tubes usually held upright by a stable base that is substantially wider than the vertical stem and has calibration markers
Graduated cylinder
Measuring pipettes that have graduations extending to the tip
serologic pipette
disposable plastic or nichrome wire which is used to aseptically transfer microorganisms from the broth, slant, or agar cultures to other media
Inoculating Loop and Needle
Stainless steel rack that holds microscopic slide during staining
staining rack
plastic, steel or wooden material that allows 5 or 20 degrees tilt for media to harden at an angle for incubating liquid cultures
Slant rack
An insulated and enclosed device that provides an optimal condition of temperature, humidity, and other environmental conditions required for growth of organisms
incubator
A laboratory equipment made from a container filled with heated water used to incubate samples at a constant temperature over a long period of time
water bath
Incubator and water bath should be recorded every:
every day and before opening
