Evolution Flashcards
What did Jean baptistery Lanark suggest about evolution?
‘Inheritance of acquired characteristics’. Characteristics which develop in a organism lifetime can be passed on to the next generation . Eg if two parents build up muscle this would be passed on
What is darwins theory of natural selection?
Small changes take place over a long time. All organisms in a species vary and therefore some are more likely to survive to survive. Those are best adapted breed and pass on their characteristics
Best adapted—–> survive…..
Breed—-> pass on genes
Did Darwin know about genes?
NO!!!!!
Why was darwins theory not accepted?
The theory of natural selsction challenged the idea of God
Many scientists were not convinced as there was not sufficient evidence
What is darwins theory called?
Natural Selection
Which birds did Darwin observe?
Finches, he showed that over time they changed living in different conditions
How does natural selection work?
The organisms mutate so there is variation and the best adapted survive and breed to pass on their genes to their offspring so ‘survival of the fittest’
What is a mutation?
When a gene accidentally changes and becomes the new form
Why are mutations important?
When rabbits got a disease and most of them died a few had a mutated gene which gave them immunity and the rabbits with this gene survive to breed
Why do we classify organisms?
To make sense of how closely they are related
What are the main kingdom?
The plant
Animal
Microorganisms
What is the smallest group in the classification system?
Species
What can members of a same species do?
Breed together
Why is it useful to draw evolutionary trees?
They show the relationships between kingdoms
