Energy In Biomass Flashcards
What does a pyramid of biomass represent?
The mass of organisms at each stage in a food chain and are more accurate than ?Pyramids of numbers for example one bush may have many insects feeding on it but the mass of the bush is far greater than the mass of the insects
Where does the energy come from?
Green plants transfer solar energy to chemical energy which is then passed through the food chain
Why are plants at the base of the pyramid?
Plants capture light energy and transfer it to chemical energy they make food which is then eaten by animals. Plants start the process of energy transfer in living organisms
The biomass at each stage in a food chain is ………. That at the previous stage
Less
Where are materials that are used transferred to?
The surroundings
What is some of the biomass used as?
Respiration which releases energy for process which include movement so the more something moves the more energy it uses and less available for growth
What are the waste materials?
Faeces and urine
How else is the energy used?
Maintaining a normal body temperature
Which process in cells releases energy from food material?
Respiration
What do detritus feeders do?
Start the process of decay by eating dead animals or plants and producing waste materials
Give an example of a detritus feeder
Worms
What do decay organisms do?
They are microorganism (bacteria, fungi) that are called decomposes
What are the perfect conditions for decay organisms?
Warm
Wet
Plenty of oxygen
All the materials in the dead organisms are ………… Returning ……… To the soil
Recycled
Nutrients
How can hum and recycle waste?
Sewage treatment plants
Compost heaps
