Evolution Flashcards
what is the theory of evolution?
More than three billion years ago, life on earth began as simple organisms from which more complex organisms evolved
what is the idea of natural selection?
Natural selection is the theory created by Charles Darwin, it explains that as everyone has different genes they have variation. Individuals have some characteristics that make it more likely for them to survive, those that don’t die so only the best breed and pass on the characteristics to the next generation
why did people not agree with Darwin?
- It went against religious beliefs
- Darwin didn’t have a good explanation for it
- There wasn’t enough evidence for it because no studies had been done before it
what was Lamarck’s theory?
Lamarck argued that if characteristics were used a lot by an organism it would become more developed over its lifetime. Lamarck believed that these acquired characteristics would be passed onto the next generation
why were Lamarck’s ideas rejected
Lamarck’s theory was rejected because his ideas didn’t match his experiments and it followed Darwin’s ideas
