Energy Transfer Flashcards
what are the two types of variation?
Genetic variation and Environmental variation
what are characteristics determined by?
The genes inherited from parents
what is genetic variation?
The difference between species in genes so that they are not genetically identical
what is environmental variation?
The differences between members of the same species caused by environmental differences
how many pairs of chromosomes are there in a human cell?
23 pairs
what is sexual reproduction?
Sexual reproduction is the fusion of female and male gametes, because there are two parents the offspring contains a mixture of their parents’ genes
what is asexual reproduction?
Asexual reproduction involves only one parent. There’s no fusion of gametes, no mixing of chromosomes and no genetic variation between parent and offspring. The offspring are genetically identical to the parent - they’re clones
how does asexual reproduction work?
- X shaped chromosomes have two identical halves
- Each chromosome splits down the middle
- They form two identical sets of half chromosome and a membrane forms around each set
- Finally the DNA replicates itself to form identical cells with a complete set of chromosomes
how is cloning done?
- A selected embryo and selected sperm artificially fertilise
- the embryo develops and splits
- These are put into several uteruses and are born identical
what are the issues of cloning?
- There is a reduced gene pool
- Possible health issues
- Slippery slopes to human cloning
what are the benefits of cloning?
- There can be more study and understanding of ageing etc.
2. Endangered species can be preserved
what is genetic engineering?
A ‘useful’ gene is cut from one organisms chromosome using enzymes and then inserted into another organisms chromosome to make useful products
what are GM crops?
Genetically Modified crops are crops that have had their genes modified to make them resistant to viruses, insects and herbicides
what is gene therapy?
Gene therapy is the change of genes to eliminate inherited diseases
