Evaluation Of The Role Of Social Influence In Social Change Flashcards
The role played by minority influence may be limited. Since minorities such as the suffragettes rarely being about social change.
Strong tendency for humans to conform to majority. People more likely to maintain status quo than social change. This Suggests that influence of minority is more latent than direct ( creates more potential for change than actual change).
A strength of the process of conversion is that it’s able to explain many examples of social change in society.
Example: suffragettes. Demonstrate stages needed for conversion of majority. Consistency didn’t change attitudes or beliefs. Showed their commitment by risking going to jail. Felixibility by the fact they initially agreed for voting age of 30. Shows social change can be explained by social influence research, can be seen in real life.
Schultz et al 2007 suggest unwelcome problem with social norms interventions.
Can cause people who are below norm to go to Norm. People who are drinking less incentivised to drink more in line with the norm as well as people above the norm. Called the boomerang effect.
