EVALUATE GENETICS Flashcards
1
Q
FOR
A
- Cocarro, soo rhee, Hans brunner
- ball et al did a study looking at 1,116 pairs of 10 year old twins from England and Wales. Mothers and teachers had to identify them as bullies by check list
- found 63% concordance rate for MZ twins and 33% for DZ twins over 60% of the difference explained by genetic influences
2
Q
AGAINST
A
- not 100% concordance in ball
- cocarro and soo rhee show genes cannot explain all behaviour and a diathesis stress explanation would be better
- Frazetto et al did research on MAOA and found a link between low activity MAOA and aggressive behaviour but only in those who had a serious traumatic event in their life prior to age 15 so environment may be a factor
3
Q
APPLICATION
A
- focus on genes for bullying has directed research to look at multiple genetic causes
- Vassos et al did a meta analysis on bullying studies and could not find one single gene responsible
- research is therefore ongoing and if genetic combo can be found then treatment programmes can be developed
4
Q
ALTERNATIVE
A
- by assuming that bullying behaviour is due to only genetic factors this is reductionist and ignores other equally plausible explanations such as EGD and ToM
