ASSUMPTIONS

- psychodynamic roots in what makes children feel safe or unsafe in schools such as bowlby which can say children need to be attached to an adult to feel safe
- whole school approach: dysfunctional school system affects whole school community therefore CAPSLE includes staff and parents in wider community
- Cognitive element: bullying aided by inability to mentalist others internal states CAPSLE assumes improving this ability reduces bullying (how would you feel)
- focus on primary school: tendency towards aggression in primary school are at risk of bullying others focusing on interventions young will help as this is when a child is developing perception on aggression

- whole school campaign to highlight importance of social skills
- uses classroom discussions and posters leaflets etc
- purpose to get everyone talking about how to solve problems non-aggressively
- effects should be seen such as peaceful playgrounds and no pushing or shoving

A
- teachers discipline skills developed to use rewards rather than punishments
- focus on addressing real school wide causes of bullying rather than punishing behaviour
- bullying behaviour presented by one person is a problem for everyone as everyone has a role eg bystander
- this prevents bullying from being isolated

- can be seen through gentle warrior programme using role play relaxation and self defence methods
- children learn to cope with bullying and bystander behaviour
- skills are peaceful and non-violent
- some are physical or cognitive

- older students from other secondary schools can help younger children model both skills and language of peaceful behaviour emphasising conflict resolution and helping others

- at the end of the day children have a period of time to consider how they conducted themselves focusing on their impact on the thoughts and feelings of other people
