Euthanasia Flashcards
1
Q
Arguments in favour of euthanasia and assisted suicide
A
- Patients should be allowed to choose what is best for them (Autonomy)
- Patients can avoid a lengthy and unnecessary suffering period (Beneficence)
- It would free up beds and other NHS resources that would otherwise be used for these patients, therefore there is less stress on the NHS and they can’t treat other patients

Q
Arguments against euthanasia and assisted suicide
A
- It goes against some religious practices - it may lead to doctors or relatives playing the role of god (philosophical dilemma arises in this situation)
- Even if someone has expressed the choice to receive euthanasia when they are in distress, they may change their mind at a time when they can no longer express themselves
- If the case is not clear cut or well documented, relatives may endure murder charges.
- Relatives may abuse the situation by allowing convenient euthanasia on a patient to suit their own needs
