Eustatic and isostatic sae level changes Flashcards
What is eustatic change
-global in sea level change - rise OR fall
What is isostatic change
- a local rise or fall in a sea-level - depends if they were glaciated
- change in land relative to the sea
What is the causes of a eustatic rise
- water expands when hot
- climate warms - glacial melt
What is the cause of eustatic fall
- gets cooler - ice gets formed - hydro cycle slows
- contraction - water gets smaller
What is the cause of sea levels rising isostatically
-land is pushed down - sediment or mass pushing down - glacial ice
What is the cause of sea levels falling isostatically
-land is pushed up after sediment or mass is relieved off the land - glacial melt off of the lang
What is tectonic sea-level change
- large change to the crust (sea bed)
- depressions - the weight of the volcanic islands causes the sea level to lower
- uplifts - the creation of islands - displacement of water - sea level rise
What is stage 1 of the flow of sea level change
- Eustatic Fall
- climate calls
- more snow+ice
- more water stored
- hydrocycle slows
- sea levels fall
- whole planet eustatic fall
- GLACIAL TIME PERIOD
What is stage 2 of the flow of sea level change
- Isostatic readjustment
- More ice sheets - glacial land sinks
- Affects some coastlines - not all
- Isostatic moderates eustatic fall
What is stage 3 of the flow of sea level change
- eustatic rise
- climate heats
- ice melts
- sea levels rise
- INTERGLACIAL TIME PERIOD
What is stage 4 of the flow of sea level change
- Isostatic readjustment
- Less ice sheets
- land rises as sea level rise (locally)
- Isostatic readjustment
- Moderates eustatic rise
