Coasts - Theme 2 - EROSION + DEPOSITION + TRANSPORTATION Flashcards
What is hydraulic action
-water forces itself into cracks and compresses the air inside pressurising the rock
What is wave quarryinh
-removal of rocks and other debris on a cliff by wave action
What is cavitation
- Intense erosion due to the surface collapse of air bubbles found in rapid flows of water
- impolosion of the bubble creates a micro jet of water that travells at high speed
What is corrasion
-Sand and pebbles hurld against the cliff foot by the waves
What is abrasian
-a sandpapering effect where rocks are dragged along the sea bed
What is solution
- Weak acids desolve soluble rock
- also a transport
What is attrition
-Rocks hitting each other and wearing down to become smaller
What is Suspension
-rock float in the water
What is traction
-big rock gets rolled
What is saltation
-Rock bounces
What effects what can be transported
- DENSITY
- wave energy
What is deposition
-sediment is dropped because there is not enough energy
Where will deposition happen
- LEC
- constructive waves
- shallow - less friction
- less wind - less wave energy
What is the aeolian process
-material eroded transported or deposited by the wind
What does the aeolian process form
- Can move sand
- Can form sand dunes
