Eukaryotic Cells Flashcards
What is a eukaryotic cell?
A cell with a ‘true’ nucleus and membrane bound organelles (animal/plant cells)
What is a membrane bound organelle?
Organelles covered with their own membrane
What is the function of plasma membrane?
Controls what goes in and out of cell
What is the function of cytoplasm?
Maintains cell shape and is where chemical reactions take place
What is the function of the nucleus?
Controls cell activity and hold DNA
What is the function of nucleolus?
Maintains RNA (ribonucleic acid)
What is the function of nuclear envelope?
Provides structural framework for nucleus and separates nucleus from cytoplasm
What is the function of nuclear pore?
Allows small molecules/ions to freely pass/diffuse in/out of nucleus
What is the function of rough endoplasmic reticulum?
Has ribosomes attached (protein synthesis). Newly attached synthesized proteins are transported to the golgi apparatus
What is the function of smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
Synthesis and transport of lipids/carbohydrates
What is the function of the golgi apparatus?
Newly made proteins are modified and then packaged into vesicle’s
What is the function of vesicle’s?
Transports materials around/out of cell
What is the function of lysosome’s?
These are vesicle’s that contain hydrolytic acid. They break down material waste in a cell.
What is the function of centriole’s?
Take part in cell division. They form Spidle fibres that move chromosome’s during cell division
What is the function of mitochondrian?
Aerobic respiration
