Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
What is epithelial tissue?
Tissue that lines the inner/outer surface of organs.
What is clumnar epithelium?
A single layer of epithelial cells which are tall and line the digestive tract.
What is squamous epithelium?
A single layer of thin, flat cells that line the alveoli (lungs).
What is the role of cilia and where is it found?
To waft dust/particle/mucus containing pathogens away from the lungs in waves. It is found in the trachea and lungs.
What is the role of goblet cells?
To produce mucus.
COPD reduces efficiency of gas exchange in lungs- why? (5 points)
Cilia slows and stops beating.
Mucus builds up which clogs the airways.
This reduces elasticity and surface area of alveoli, therefore the alveoli cannot recoil.
Coughing ruptures thin epithelial cells in alevoli which then makes the person susceotiblke to pathigens invading and creates scarring.
Therefore, less gas exchange.
Describe alveolar epithelium in lungs. (4 points)
The alveolar epithelium is made up of squamous cells.
This layer of cells is thin- one cell thick- which ensures a shirt diffusion path.
The cells are tightly packed together to increase surface area.
Alveolar epithelium contains elastin so that the alveoli can stretch when air enters, and recoil when it exits.
Describe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. (6 points)
Cilia slow and stop beating.
Mucus builds up which clogs airways.
Coughing ruptures the thin epithelial cells in the alveoli.
Less gas exchange occurs.
The person is more susceptible to pathogens invading.
Smokers are more susceptible to this.
