Prokaryotic Cells Flashcards
What is a prokaryotic cell?
Cell with DNA that is not enclosed in a nucleus, and has no membrane-bound organelles (bacteria cell)
What is the function of plasmid?
Carries genes that benefit the survival of the organism
What is the function of nucleoid?
Region where genetic information can be found, and controls cellular activity
What is the function of slime capsule?
Protects cell and prevents desiccation (drying out)
Does gram positive bacteria have a thin or thick peptidoglycan cell wall?
Thick
Does gram negative bacteria have a thin or thick peptidoglycan cell wall?
Thin
How many plasma membrane(s) does gram positive bacteria have?
Only one
How many plasma membrane(s) does gram negative bacteria have?
Two
Which gram bacteria is easier to treat and why?
Gram positive bacteria is easier to treat as it lacks an extra plasma membrane.
What colour does gram positive bacteria stain?
Purple/violet
What colour does gram negative bacteria stain?
Red/pink
Which part of gram bacteria gets stained?
Cell wall
What is the order of gram negative bacteria’s outer layers going from innerside to outerside?
Plasma membrane (inner)
