Define race
Percieved biological or physical differences between groups (skin colour).
Define ethnicity
Cultural differenced between groups based on things such as religion, language, country of origin.
Define ethnic minority group
A group who share the same cultural background but which is different to that of the majority culture in the country where they reside.
Define immigrant
Someone who has moved from country to permanently reside in another.
Define first generation immigrant
Those who moved country themselves.
Define second generation immigrant
Their children
Define third generation immigrant
Their grandchildren
Define asylum seeker
Someone who seeks refuge in another country for a temporary period if it is too dangerous for them to be in their own country due to war.
Define illegal immigrant
Someone who is not legally entitled to the live in a country (illegal).
Define racism
Negative attitudes toward a person due to their race/ ethnic background.
Define institutional racism
When the way an organisation operated e.g its polocies and practices, have the unconvous effect of discriminating against certain ethnic groups.
Define assimilation
When an ethnic minority group become absorbed into the culture of the ethnic majority and adopt common shared norms and values and drop their own.
Define integration
When ethnic minorities become part of the majority culture and adopt their norms and values and cultural practices. Multiculturalism.
Defin cultural/ethnic resistance (to racism)
When an ethnic minority group unite togethere and strengthen their own ethnic identity as a way of fighting/ resisting racism.
Define code switching
The way in which some ethnic groups behave differently with family and with their peers- johal/burdsey/derrignton and kendall.
Define cultural comfort zones
Term used to describe the way some ethnic minorities form peer groups with those from same ethnic background as this makes them feel more comfortable - sewell.
Define ethnocentric curriculum
Curriculum based around the cominant cultyre e.g In the UK the school curriculum is based around white british history litrature, politics - coard.
Define hyper masculinity
Term used to describe the identity of black males who follow role models from rap videos- sewell
Define blasian/brasian identity
In the UK this refers to young asians who adopt black asian identities - alexander
Define dual identities
Refers to those who have more than one ethnic identity e.g british and asian - johal/burdsey/nayak
Define cultural borrowing
The mixing and shaming of differint styles and cultures e.g white and asians listening to rap music - Back
Define cultural masks
When young people adopt or try out new ethnic identities, different to their own - back/johal.
