Define biological determinism of age
Belief that human behaviour is directly controlled by an individuals genes or some component of their physiology.
Define rites of passage
The ceremony and ritual which may accompany the changes of status that occur in the course off the life cycle e.g birthdays.
Define age boundaries
Social and legal boundaries which mark a particular age.
Define life course
The concept refers to a socially defines “timetable of behaviours as appropriate for particular life stages within any society.
Define moral panic
The media amplifies a deviant stereotype of a group/ person by over reporting it and exxagerating the behaviour. This has the potential to reach millions and influence their judgments. A moral panic is created as people fear the group/ person because of the opinions.
Define anti school subculture
These are negative about school. They rejject the shcool rules and dont conform at school. They get status from their friends and by rot conforming.
Define pro school subculture
The groups of students who accept conform to the ethos rules and values of the school.
Define pivot generation
The idea that middle aged people carry the responsibility of caring for their children and their parents so they swing between the two.
Define dual burden
The idea that caring for both the children and the parents is a double responisbilty suffered by the middle age population.
Define mid life crisis
A transition of identity and self confidence that can occur in middle aged individuals.

The purchase of goods or services for the specific purpose of displaying ones wealth.

How people may leave social roles when they get older.
Define active ageing
When this period of life provides new opportunities and can be seen as an active and engaged stage of life - clareke and warren.

Discrimination based on age especially prejudive against the elderly
Define institutional ageism
Practices and polocies engrained in an institution to disadvantage people on the basis of age.
