How does informed consent change when studying children?
Must get consent from the guardian but also from the child to a degree they can understand
How does deception change when studying children?
Children are very easy to deceive or they may not understand in the first place
How does confidentiality change for children?
Children’s identities must be protected
How does debrief change for children?
Difficult to debrief children because of their lack of understanding
How does withdrawal change for children?
Researchers should watch for signs of discomfort in the child so that they can be withdrawn
How does protection from harm change for children?
Have to be extremely careful that the child doesn’t become stressed
What is the UNCRC?
United Nations Charter for Rights of the Child
Give 4 important clauses in the UNCRC for child research
- Article 3 - Child’s best interests should be top priority
- Article 12 - Every child has the right to express their views, feelings and wishes
- Article 16 - Every child has the right to privacy
- Article 36 - They should be protected from all forms of exploitation
Give 4 Protection vs Participation points in regards to studying children
- A child should have the right to be involved in research but doing so might be distressing
- Participation may be justified if the results are trult beneficial
- Alderson - all children have the right to be researched
- Abebe and Bessell - all children have the right to be properly researched
