What are the 3 criteria for consent to be legal?

A

Patient must have the capacity to make an informed decision
Patient must be well-informed on the reasons for and implications of the medical procedure
Patient must have complete autonomy over their decision to undergo treatment and must not be forced or pressurised in any way

what is Gillick competence? How is this assessed.

A

term used to assess whether a child under the age of 16 may consent to or refuse medical treatment without parental involvement.
It is assessed by judging the child’s maturity to understand the reasons and consequences fo the medical treatment.

What are the four ethical pillars?

A

Autonomy: respect for the patient’s right to self-determination
Beneficence: duty to act in the patient’s best interests
Non-maleficence: day not to harm the patient
Equity: duty to treat all patients within a population equally and equitably.
