Blood stain lab Flashcards
When is a thin blood film/blood smear used?
When there is an abnormality in FBC
What can a FBC be used for?
To give information on numbers of RBCs, WBCs and platelets. This can indicate if an infection is viral, bacterial or parasitic.
What does a Blood smear show?
Useful for identifying abnormal cell types and morphology
Why is a blood smear not a routine investigation?
It is expensive
It is labour intensive
It requires expertise to interpret
what type of pathogen may be present if there is an increase in Neutrophils?
Bacteria
If a virus pathogen is present, which WBC will increase in number?
Lymphocytes
What types of pathogen is present if there is an increase in Monocytes?
Virus/chronic bacterial infection
If a parasite infection is present, what type of WBC will increase in number?
eosinophils
What is a gram stain used for?
identifying species of bacteria
Give an example of gram positive bacteria
Staphylococcus aureus
Give an example of gram negative bacteria
E.Coli
When is oil immersion used?
With the light microscope, usually to see bacteria
What is the oil used to do?
Used to refract the light coming through the sample.
What magnification does the oil immersion lens magnify at?
x100
