What is deception?
Deception means to purposefully mislead partiipants by witholding information about the experiment. Participants cannot provide fully informed consent if they have been decieved.
When can deception be fine?
Acceptable to let one condition know that the other condition is doing the same thing as them, when they might not be.
How can deception be tackled?
Providing a full debrief at the end of the experiment and made aware of the true aims. They should also be told what their data is going to be used for as they have the right to withold. Should also be assured that their behaviour is normal and typical.
What is the right to withdraw?
Participants should be allowed to leave at any point, if they are feeling uncomfortable or change their mind.
Becomes difficult in a natural setting where partcipants don’t know they’re being studied, so don’t know they can withdraw.
What is informed consent?
Participants should know what is going to happen, such as the aims, procedures, rights and what their data will be used for.
How can informed consent be tackled?
Signing a consent letter that details all relevant information without giving it away. Under 16s use parental consent.
What is confidentiality?
Participants should have the right to control information about themselves. Known as numbers or initials - reminded that information is protected and will not be shared with other researchers.
What is emotional and physical harm?
A participant should not be exposed to anything that may cause them emotional or physical harm - or else unethical
