Protection from harm
At no time must a researcher conduct a study that causes severe distress to a participants’ physical an psychological welfare. The researcher must ensure that the risks do not outweigh benefits.
Privacy ethic
The right of protection from unwanted intrusion by government or other people into one’s affairs.
Anonymity ethic
The protection of people’s identities where, when providing info for research, they do not disclose their name.
Confidentiality ethic
The establishment and maintenance of a therapeutic relationship. Information given by a patient will not be disclosed to anyone.
Voluntary participation
A participant willingly decides to take part in research. They must not experience any pressure, coercion or threatening to participate.
Withdrawal rights
The right of the participant to cease their participation in a study at any time without negative consequences or pressure to continue.
Informed consent
The researcher must obtain written, informed permission stating that they consent to participate in the study voluntarily and have been given all necessary information about the study (purpose and procedure).
Deception
Occurs when participants are not fully informed about the procedures or aims of the experiment before it is conducted.
