Attachment meaning
The close emotional bond or relationship between an infant and the mother or primary caregiver.
Seeking attachment is an innate behaviour?
Attachments formed are hierarchal and multiple attachments can occur.
Sensitive period of attachment.
Roughly the first year of your life, during which attachment must occur for optimal development.
Separation anxiety?
Approximately 8 months of age; its an indication that a mother-child bond has been formed.
How to avoid long-term difficulties?
For the first 2 years of an infant’s life, the mother and child should not be separated.
Phase 1: preattachment age
0-2 months
Phase 1: preattachment characteristics
The infant responds to people but does not discriminate between people.
Phase 2: Preliminary attachment age
2-7 months
Phase 2: Preliminary attachment characteristics
The infant will responds to familiar people and prefer to be with their primary caregiver.
Phase 3: Clear-cut attachment age
7 months - 2 years
Phase 3: Clear-cut attachment characteristics
The infant is mobile and can use their caregiver as a secure base from which they can explore their environment.
Phase 4: Goal-directed partnership age
2 years +
Phase 3: Goal dorected partnership attachment characteristics
The infant will adjust to times when the caregiver is not present and will be more willing to stay with others or alone.
