ETC Flashcards
1
Q
Describe Coenzyme Q.
A
oxidizing agent, long hydrophobic tail and is able to move freely
2
Q
Describe cytochrome c.
A
iron heme prosthetic group, iron heme carries one electron at a time, shuttles electron from complex III to IV
3
Q
Briefly describe the ETC in four steps.
A
- Complex I and II transfer e- to Q reducing it to QH2
- QH2 passes e- to cytochrome c through complex III
- Complex IV transfers electrons from reduced cytochrome c to O2
- Electron flow through complex I, III, and IV is accompanied by proton flow from the matrix to the inner membrane space
4
Q
What are the respiratory inhibitors and where to do inhibit?
A
NADH to Q: inhibited by rotenone, barbiturates
Q to Cyt c: inhibited by antimycin A
Cyt c to O2: inhibited by CN-, CO
5
Q
How many protons are pumped across the gradient per molecule of NADH and FADH2?
A
10, 6
