ESBL Flashcards
ESBL means
extended spectrum beta lactamase prodducers
they are—and they execrete—which inactiavtes
gram negative/enterobactaice / the enzyme beta lactamase/beta lactam (penicillin) type antibiotics
resistance to beta lactams emerged —and —
several years ago and has continued to rise
ESBLS are:
klebsiella/ E coli/serratia/ others
ESBLs are eznymes that mediate resistance to—but do not affect—
extended spectrum (third gen) cephalosporins (ex: ceftazidime, cefotaxime, and ceftriaxone) and monobactams (aztreonam) /ceffamycin (cefoxitin and cefotetan) OR carbapenems ((e.g., meropenem or
imipenem).
ESBLs are often located on—
plasmids that are transferable from strain to strain between bacterial species
beta lactamase ihibitos like—generally—-
clavulanic acid/ ESBL producing strains
resistance genes associated with ESBL

OXA could hydrolyze oxacillin and related anti-staphylococcal penicillins.
Poorly inhibited by clavulanic acid
