Erosion features Flashcards
Abrasion
Rocks and pebbles are hurled at high velocity against the cliff, causing pieces to break away.
Attrition
rocks, pebbles and sand grind against each other as they are moved by wave action, grinding into smother and smaller pieces.
Blowhole
A vertical shaft along a cliff formed from a sea cave as water is forced upwards.
Corrosion
the slightly acidic nature of seawater results in it slowly dissolving and weakening the rock over time.
Destructive waves
narrow, tall and high energy waves which erode more material than they deposit.
High energy coastlines
an area which experiences strong winds and high energy waves.
Hydraulic action
Waves trap air in cracks in the rock called a cavitation, which expand as the wave breaks, cracking the rock.
Wave cut notch
a cavity formed at the base of the cliff due to erosion.
