Deposistional features Flashcards
Alluvium
deposit of clay and silt left floodwater from a river valley.
Barrier beaches
sand and pebble ridge separating a shore from a lagoon.
Cuspate foreland
formed from longshore drift of material traveling opposite directions along a coast. extends out at a 90 degree angle from the coast as a triangular spit.
Depositional landforms
land structures formed from the accumulation of depositional material such as sand and shingle.
Haff coast
a long shallow lagoon separated from the main coast by a barrier beach.
low energy environment
An area which experiences weak winds and low energy waves-is typically the site of coastal deposition.
Recurved spit
A coastal spit which has hooked due to changing wind and wave direction as it extends outwards.
Spit
extension of the beach from the headland due to longshore drift
Constructive waves
wide, low-lying and low energy waves which deposit more material than they erode.
Suspension
precipitate is held in place within the water and is unable to deposit.
Wave-cut platforms
a flat pebbly beach left behind from the collapse of a sea cliff.
Tombolo
a spit which has connected an island to the mainland.
Saltation
sand and smaller material rolls and is carried by either winds or currents before being deposited in a shadow zone.
Traction
the rolling movement of larger boulders and pebbles along he sea floor due to currents.
Till
unsorted material deposited by glacial movement
