Erosion Flashcards
erosion
the process by which wind, water, ice, or gravity transports soil and sediment form one location to another
weathering
the process of wearing or being worn by long exposure to the atmosphere.
water cycle
the continous movement of water from the ocean to the atmosphere to the land and back to the ocean
evaporation
takes place when water from the oceans and the Earths surface changes omto water vapor.
condensation
takes place when water vapor cools and changes into water droplets that form clouds in the atmosphere.
precipitation
is rain, snow, sleet,or hail that falls from clouds onto the earths land and ocean
surface runoff
is precipitation that flows over land into streams and rivers
tributary
a stream that flows into a lake or into a larger stream
watershed
the area of land that is drained by a water system
continental divide
the boundary between drainage areas that have streams that flow in opposite directions
deposition
the process in which material is laid down
delta
a fan-shaped mass of material deposited at the mouth of a stream
floodplain
an area along a river that forms from sediments depostied when the river overflows its banks
water table
the upper surface of underground water; the upper boundary of the zone of saturation
sewage treatment plants
a facility that cleans the waste materials found in water that comes from sewers or drains
septic tank
a tank that sperates solid waste from liquids and that has bacteria that break down the solid waste
sea stacks
a chimney, especially one on a factory, or a vertical exhaust pipe on a vehicle.
sea arches
forms as the result of different rates of erosion typically due to the varied resistance of bedrock
sea caves
formed primarily from erosion caused by waves.
wave-cut terraces
a shallow-water shelf inclining gently away from the base of an eroded sea cliff.
headlands
a narrow piece of land that projects from a coastline into the sea.
beach
a strip of land covered with sand, pebbles, or small stones at the edge of a body of water, especially by the ocean between high- and low-water marks.
glacier
a slowly moving mass or river of ice formed by the accumulation and compaction of snow on mountains or near the poles.
glacial drift
A general term applied to all rock material transported by a glacier and deposited directly by or from the ice, or by running water emanating from a glacier. This category is also used for Glacial sediment. Subtopics: Stratified glacial sediment.
till
up to (the point in time or the event mentioned); until.
stratified drift
predominantly sorted sediment laid down by or in meltwater from glaciers and includes sand, gravel, silt, and clay arranged in layers.
