Astronomy Flashcards
Ptolemy
believed that earth was the center of the universe and the planets and sun revolved around the earth
Copernicus
believed that the sun is the center of the universe and all the planets revolved around the sun
Brahe, Tycho
recorded very precise observations of the planets and stars
Kepler, Johannes
used brahe’s work to determine that all the planets revolve aroung the sun in elliptical orbits
Galileo
used a telescope to make important discoveries about the moon and sun
Newton, Isaac
deiscovered that all objects in the universe attract each other through gravitational force
Hubble, Edwin
proved that other galaxies exist beyond the milky way
Ursa major
a constellation of the northern sky
Ursa minor
the group of stars that includes the north pole of the heavens and the stars which form the Little Dipper with the North Star at the tip of the handle. called also Little Bear.
Orion
: a group of stars in the sky that looks like a hunter with a line of three bright stars for a belt
Canis major
stars that look like a greater dog.
Cassiopeia
a northern group of stars between Andromeda and Cepheus.
Red giant
a very large star of high luminosity and low surface temperature. Red giants are thought to be in a late stage of evolution when no hydrogen remains in the core to fuel nuclear fusion.
White dwarf
a small very dense star that is typically the size of a planet. A white dwarf is formed when a low-mass star has exhausted all its central nuclear fuel and lost its outer layers as a planetary nebula.
Main-sequence star
any star that has a hot, dense core which fuses hydrogen into helium to produce energy
