Define ERCP:

A

This combines endoscopy and fluoroscopy to diagnose and treat problems of the biliary and pancreatic duct systems

How is ERCP carried out?

A

Catheter is advanced from side viewing duodenoscope via the ampulla into the common bile duct.

Contrast is then injected and X-rays are taken to show lesions in the biliary and pancreatic ducts

Indications:

A

Not routinely used in diagnosis.

Therapeutically:

  • Removal of stones in common bile duct
  • stenting of benign and malignant strictures
  • obtaining brushings of strictures to determine nature
