What does ERCP stand for?
A
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancretography.

Define ERCP:
A
This combines endoscopy and fluoroscopy to diagnose and treat problems of the biliary and pancreatic duct systems

How is ERCP carried out?
A
Catheter is advanced from side viewing duodenoscope via the ampulla into the common bile duct.
Contrast is then injected and X-rays are taken to show lesions in the biliary and pancreatic ducts

Indications:
A
Not routinely used in diagnosis.
Therapeutically:
- Removal of stones in common bile duct
- stenting of benign and malignant strictures
- obtaining brushings of strictures to determine nature

Complications:
A
Pancreatitis
Perforation
Bleeding
Cholangitis
