Equipment Part Definitions, etc.. Flashcards
Head stock
contains the spindle for various work holding attachment
spindle
revolves in heavy duty bearings, rotated by belts, gears or combination of both.
The spindle is hollow and tapered to allow for the use of a knock out bar and for long stock to be turned without dangerous over hang
Tailstock
supports the outer end of work. Can be adjusted to different lengths.
Is essential for drilling and is necessary to support long work being rotated.
cross slide
transverse tool movement
Compound rest
Angular tool movement
Parting
Operation of cutting off material (can also be used to cut grooves)
Tool Post
Cutting tools mount to this
What is a lathe dog
A device clamped to one end of the material to drive the workpiece.
types of lathe dog
- Bent Tail standard dog
- Bent Tail safety dog
- Clamp Type Dog
What is a bent tail standard dog
Has set screw exposed and is used for cylindrical work
What is bent tail safety dog
similar to the standard but has the set screw recessed. Usually preferred over the standard.
What is the clamp type dog
Designed for turning square/ rectangular work.
Types of spindles
- Threaded spindle
- Cam lock spindle
- Long Tapered Key spindle
What is the threaded spindle
permits attachment onto the threads. It seats on the spindle flange. Less used in modern era.
Cam lock spindle
Has a short taper that fits in a tapered recess. The studs on the attachment slide into the holes and are locked by tightening the cams. Most common in the modern era.
Long Key tapered
Has a protruding taper and keyway which an attachment fits on. When mounting the attachments the key way will be on top slide over the key until you are able to engage the threads.
Lead screw
Transmits power to the carriage through gearing and clutch arraignment in the carriage apron
variable speed control
controls the spindle speed
Power speed lever
Engages clutch for automatic power feed and automatic power cross feed.
half nut lever
engages the half nuts for threading
carriage handwheel
moves the entire unit left and right
Collets
Vary in sizes, have three even sections that are split slightly more than half way, The collets hold the piece being turned.
Types of collets
Steel collet: Made of steel and has no way for adjustments in size. The size is specific not a range
Steel w/ Rubber: Collets of this type have segments bonded to rubber which allows a range of .100”
Shapes of collets
Primarily the round but also available in hexagonal, square, and octagonal. The rubber type is only available in the round shape.
