Appendix to Hydropower Safety Policy Flashcards
What are the 4 rules for individual employees
- Shall not use or be under the influence of intoxicants or illegal drugs while on duty
- No fighting
- No scuffling or horseplay
- Don’t turn air hoses on youself
4 practices for the individual employee
- Never distract another worker unless it is necessary for the work or something unsafe happens
- Keep supervisor informed of mental or physical conditions that may interfere with safe work performance.
- Remove hazards or report them to your supervisor
- Attend and participate in safety meetings
What is housekeeping
Should not be mistaken for a push broom effort. It means more. It is the orderly arrangement of tools, equipment, supplies and storage facility. It is a source of individual pride, is a practical method of increasing efficiency, reduces accidents, and improves morale.
Classes of fire
Class A- ordinary materials, such as wood, paper, rags, and rubbish
Class B- Flammable liquids
Class C- in or near energized electrical equipment
Class D- burning metals such as magnesium
Rules for fire prevention
- Signs prohibiting smoking and open flames shall be strictly observed.
- Rooms protected by automatic fire equipment with out a time discharge and audible alarm must have the doors blocked open.
a. Equipment must be made inoperable and doors blocked for any work other than filtering.
b. For filtering or transferring block the door but leave the fire equipment operation if equipped with a discharge delay and audible alarm. - Wiping rags and waste must be kept in tightly closed safety containers.
- Liquids which are highly volatile and flammable shall be stored and transported in approved containers.
No open or glass containers because when mixed with air it could be explosive - All apparatus must be bonded together and grounded.
eye protection must be worn (ful covered goggles or face shield
Drilling or chipping stone, brick or concrete
grinding, buffing, or wire brushing
over head drilling or power drills
welding, cutting, or burning
handling acids, caustics, chlorine or similar materials
cleaning or scaling metal
machining brass
Eye wear practices
Full cover goggles should be worn when abnormal amounts of airborne particles are present.
hearing protection
Mandatory in all areas where noise level is above 85 DB
At what oxygen level must you use a self contained breathing apparatus or air line respirator
19.5%
What are the three groups of contaminants which require respiratory protection
- gaseous
- particles
- Gaseous and particles
What is gaseous
immediately dangerous to life: So dangerous the individual would immediately have breathing difficulties
minimum use: SCBA, air line respirator, gas mask designed for specific gas.
not immediately dangerous to life: gases which wouldn’t affect a persons ability to escape. Minimum protection air line respirator or chemical cartridge respirator
Where must head protection be worn?
Switchyards, where cranes are being operated, areas which maintenance, repair, construction or contractor activities are in progress, areas around scaffolds or other elevated work, and anywhere designated by the project supervisor.
What must be said to visitors
The following rules are necessary to prevent injury to persons, interruptions to electrical service, damage to equipment, and will insure a safe trip through the plant.
- Stay close to your tour guide and follow all instructions
- do not touch equipment or open cabinet doors
- Expect loud and unusual noise as it is common in a power plant
- Failure to observe these rules will immediately end the tour and dismissal from the plant.
Clearance and grounding rules
- Treat all electrical equipment as energized unless properly cleared.
- Only approved grounding devices shall be used. Ground switches must not be used in lieu of safety ground.
- Person holding the clearance shall be responsible for placing and removing all grounds.
- Do not ground supposedly dead circuits without feeling out with a ground stick or high voltage tester.
- When attaching grounds fasten ground end first . Line or equipment end must never be attached by hand
- When removing grounds never remove ground end until after clamp has been removed from the line or equipment.
- All work on grounded circuits must be sone between grounds as close as practical.
- Phase and neutral reactors shall not be worked on unless de energized.
- Grounds may be removed for purpose of testing but must be placed back on immediately after test is complete and you must have the approval of the clearance holder.
Power plant operations rules
On entering or leaving remote plants notify the operator in control of the station.
Notify the shift operator when entering or leaving after hours or before designated work hours.
Electrical tools and portable lighting used in damp areas must be plugged into GFI outlets.
