Q

What must be said to visitors

A

The following rules are necessary to prevent injury to persons, interruptions to electrical service, damage to equipment, and will insure a safe trip through the plant.

  1. Stay close to your tour guide and follow all instructions
  2. do not touch equipment or open cabinet doors
  3. Expect loud and unusual noise as it is common in a power plant
  4. Failure to observe these rules will immediately end the tour and dismissal from the plant.

Q

Clearance and grounding rules

A
  1. Treat all electrical equipment as energized unless properly cleared.
  2. Only approved grounding devices shall be used. Ground switches must not be used in lieu of safety ground.
  3. Person holding the clearance shall be responsible for placing and removing all grounds.
  4. Do not ground supposedly dead circuits without feeling out with a ground stick or high voltage tester.
  5. When attaching grounds fasten ground end first . Line or equipment end must never be attached by hand
  6. When removing grounds never remove ground end until after clamp has been removed from the line or equipment.
  7. All work on grounded circuits must be sone between grounds as close as practical.
  8. Phase and neutral reactors shall not be worked on unless de energized.
  9. Grounds may be removed for purpose of testing but must be placed back on immediately after test is complete and you must have the approval of the clearance holder.

Q

Outdoor structure rules

A
  1. Never ride crane hook or crane loads

2. Never approach an open spillway with a boat.

17
Q

Outdoor structure practices

A

A. never throw or drop anything from dam roadway or forebay structure
B. Stand clear of cables or tackle that may break under strain when gate lifting equipment is used
C. Ensure safe footing and guard against falls when working on outdoor structures, height of work and weather dictates the use of barricades, safety harness and lines.
D. Working on trash racks or removing debris workers should wear life jackets or safety harness.

18
Q

Tunnel sumps and valve pits rules

A
  1. Never enter tunnels or sumps that can be flooded by lines or pumps until they are properly positioned and tagged.
  2. Always test and monitor air quality while working
  3. Follow all confined space requirements
19
Q

Tunnel sumps and valve pits practices

A

Assure fresh air practices to work area are adequate and stale air has been replaced prior to inspection or beginning work.
Safety chains and railing should be kept in place at all times the entrance is unattended.

20
Q

Turbine Pits, Generators, and Actuators Rules

A
  1. Employees must not enter the machine unless the person in charge of the work knows and notify them when you leave the work area.
  2. All workers must be out of a unit and accounted for by the person in charge prior to releasing the unit for service.
  3. Never position any part of your body on or between wicket gate arms or ring unless the servo motors are blocked and tagged.
  4. Remove all tools, personal effects, and foreign material from a unit prior to releasing it.
  5. Stand in a position to maintain balance when placing or removing blocks on servo motor. Keep hands and fingers cleared.
  6. Headgates must be placed prior to replacing wicket gate shear pins or links.
21
Q

Turbine Pits, Generators, and Actuators Practices

A
  1. Keep proper clearance from mechanical and electrical parts of a generator or turbine. Do not step on parts that can move.
  2. Be careful when working on or near the collector rings or commutators when unit is running. Empty shirt and coat pockets.
  3. Do not enter CO2 protected generator unless the system is turned off at the electrical control. If work needs to be performed a clearance is needed.
  4. Only enter a generator after a CO2 dump with a breathing apparatus and only for an emergency. If possible wait and use an oxygen analyzer.
  5. Cleaning or working in the actuator cabinet while in service stay clear of rotating and moving parts, such as flyball motor, oil pumps, valves, restoring cables, sheaves, and linkages.
  6. Stay in the clear of moving parts when tightening wicket gate packing glands.
22
Q

Penstocks, scroll case, draft tube, and water wheel rules

A
  1. Gate must be set, backfill valves properly positioned, and tagged properly to unwater a unit. Check water level and pressure on the door prior to opening.
  2. Verify proper tagging and have permission prior to entering water passages of the turbine.
  3. Be sure the servo motors are blocked prior to going through the wicket guys
  4. When inspecting the draft tube a suitable means of entering and exiting like a ladder.
  5. Adequate ventilation for turbine or waterway inspection, maintenance, or repair
23
Q

Penstocks, scroll case, draft tube, and water wheel practices

A
  1. scroll case floor near the speed ring should be washed and covered to eliminate slick areas.
  2. Safety harness and lines used when inspecting turbine and discharge ring and during scaffold insulation.
  3. Close doors if left unattended overnight.
  4. Keep water level a short distance below turbine during inspections to reduce or prevent injury.
  5. Use exploring sticks if floors are covered in water to prevent falling into hles or stumbling on uneven surfaces.
  6. Avoid strain when operating large valves. Use help and leverage devices.
24
Q

machine guard rules

A
  1. Never remove or replace a machine guard while a machine is operating
  2. Never operate a machine unless all guards are in place. Before putting a machine back in service all guards must be replaced.
25
Q

Machine guard practice

A

All machines shall be adequately guarded to protect personnel from exposed moving parts and belts

26
Q

Maintenance equipment rules

A
  1. Do not use grinding wheels above manufacturing rating, or legible speed ratings. Don’t keep wet grinding wheels submersed.
  2. Maintain minimum clearance between grinding wheel and tool rest.
  3. Full cover goggles or face shield and hearing protection required when grinding
  4. Never use compressed air to remove waste material from machines, workbenches or other areas.
