Equine Uveal Disease Flashcards
What does the anterior uvea consist of?
Iris, Choroid and Ciliary Body
-Horizonal Pupil and corpora nigra
What are the 2 main types of uveitis?
Acute or Chronic
What are signs of anterior uveitis?
Blepharospasm, Epiphora, Miosis, aqueous flare, hypopyon, hyphemia
Cataract, retinal detachment, glaucoma, phthisis bulbi
What causes anterior uveitis?
Kertatitis, ulcer, abcess, trauma, septicemia?
What are some other names for Equine Recurrent Uveitis?
ERU, Moon Blindness, Periodic ophthalmia
What are some causes of ERU?
Lepto, onchocera cervicalis, immune mediated/hypersensitivity
Appaloosa predisposed
What are clinical finding of ERU?
Uni or bilateral
Intermitant
Insidious
Common cause of blindness
Misosis Aqueous flare, hypopeon, posterior synechia, vitreal debris, liquefaction, chorioretitis, retinal detachment
Cataract, posterior synechia retinal detachment, glaucoma, phthisis bulbi
How do you diagnose ERU?
CBC, Chem, Serology (lepto), conjunctival biopsy, ultrasound
What are the goals of ERU therapy?
Control inflammation, preserve vision, maintain comfort, ID main problem
What kind of medical therapy can we use?
Systemic NSAID (Banamine)
Topical Steroid (check no ulcer)
Topical Atropine (no glaucoma)
Treat aggressively and Taper
Systemic - penicillin, doxycycline, enrofloxacin
Surgical - Cyclosporine implant, vitrectomy, intravitreal gentimicin
Enviromental modificaiton
Deworm
Vaccinate
hoof and dental care
Whats the prognosis for ERU?
Poor for vision retention only half
-Blind due to cataract, glaucoma or retinal detachment
What is a uveal cyst? Is it bad?
Cycst on uveia (iris common) and mostly benign
How can you tell a cyst from melanoma?
transillumination (cyct will, melanoma wont)
Describe the normal equine fundus?
Paurangiotic retina
50-80 vessels
Optic nerve in non-tapetal retina
What is involved in chorioretinitis?
Choroid and retina
Caused by ERU, EHV, Trauma and other
No treat
