Equine Specific Anatomy Flashcards
What structure does the hoof cover?
The distal phalanx
What is the hoof made from?
Keratin
Where does the hoof wall grow from?
The coronary dermis
What is laminae?
Folds of tissue made from coronary and laminar dermis
What is underneath the coronary and frog dermis?
The coronary and digital cushion
What does the coronary and digital cushion do?
Some pliability and ‘give’ against concussive forces
What does the stay apparatus do?
Allows the horse to rest and sleep in a standing position
What does the stay apparatus consist of?
- Muscles
- Tendons
- Ligaments
Where is the stay ligament located?
In the fore and hind limbs
Explain the stay apparatus process
- The stifle of one leg ‘locks’ using the patella ligaments
- Allows other leg to rest
- Every few minutes, the horse shifts weight to the other leg
What adaptations do the muscles involved in the stay apparatus have?
Increased collagen to help support limbs
Where are the Eustachian tubes located?
One on each side of the head
What structures do the Eustachian tubes connect together?
Connects the pharynx to the middle ear
What are the pockets within the Eustachian tubes called?
Guttural pouches
What artery and nerves are associated with guttural pouches?
- Carotid artery
- Cranial nerves
