Stiff plastic bag

Take a plastic bag or rectal sleeve to seal off lips and mouth so they have to rebreath there own CO2
The vet should be listening to the lungs at the same time
As the CO2 rises they will resist
Take the bag off and they will take a couple deep breaths
May have to do it a couple times
Also called bagging a horse

Increased resp effort with expiratory push, frequent coughing
Have trouble getting air out, not in
“Heave line” and nostril flare
Bronchioalveolar lavage for diagnosis
Steroids and bronchodilators as management, avoid allergens
Treatment
Transtracheal wash
Bronchoalveolar lavage

Influenza and Equine Herpes Virus-4 are and cause

A

Two separate viral infections that present very similarly
Primarily young horses recently in contact with new horses
Fever, tachypnea, frequent coughing
Increased risk of developing bacterial pleuropneumonia
EHV-1 can cause resp disease OR abortion OR neurologic signs
High fever + cough = nasal swab to rule out EHV-4
